Growing Fresh, Organic Art At The Conservatory

The Belle Isle Conservatory was an amazing backdrop tonight for the Inside/Out art show. It was interesting to see how different artists utilized the setting in their pieces.  Above, "Glass Head #3", by KT Andresky.
Many of the works on display showed a strong integration with the surroundings. I thought these wonderful flower wigs were so appropriate to the fernery...like Victorian ladies dressed up for their afternoon stroll.
This soaring starburst-like piece and the butterfly below looked like conservatory flora and fauna in an alternate universe.
A modern take on the cactus... (and Gumby?)

Contemporary mini-films enhanced by the shadows of the mini-jungle, and reminiscent of summer backyard parties, with movies shown on a sheet strung up between trees....

...with its poignant title...
The lily pond outside was surrounded by art as well....
More intriguing works...
...magic lanterns for an enchanting show...by Ashley Hennen, "spaces I've chosen/spaces that chose me".  Also magic at the conservatory tonight...bands playing in one of the rooms. It was like P. J.'s Lager House, with plants.
Selected works from the show will be on display (and for sale) at the Conservatory thru July 2nd. I highly recommend it. Below, a table top in the show....
There's so much more I didn't show, including the works of art that are the plants themselves... I hope at least some of these pieces stay on display so you can see them in person. For more information about the show and the artists:
You may have noticed that I don't have the artist's name for many of the works pictured. At the time I visited, no brochure or listing was available for a cheat sheet, and some of my photos of the name/title pages were too out-of-focus for me to read (I know, amateur photographer fail. Pathetic.). I would love to be able to give credit to these talented artists. If I have not included your name, please e-mail me or comment and I will update accordingly. I plan to go back this weekend get further artist info then.

Check out another upcoming event on Belle Isle that's going to be a don't-miss, Come Hear Belle Isle. It sounds like a combined discover Belle Isle/music festival thing... a great idea!

  1. Wow. It looks like Belle Isle is making a comeback. I will have to check it out.

  2. It is certainly not all sunshine and puppies, but there are some big improvements... I highly recommend bringing your bike or a picnic basket. The lighthouse end of the island is quieter and much more laid-back, especially on weekends. I'm not a fan of the evening cruising-and-loud music fun, but then I am a moderately old curmudgeon.

    See you on the island.
