Detroit's Corktown: St. Patrick's Day State Of Mind

Outside the Gaelic League, on Michigan Avenue
A walk through Corktown seemed like a good way to get in the mood for the upcoming festivities. The 52nd Detroit St. Patrick's Day Parade is Sunday, March 14th, only a little more than a week away! You know what to do that day....
The Gaelic League has a Friday night Fish Fry for $8.00...sounds like a great way to start a week of celebrating Ireland.
The neighborhood has charming Victorian gingerbread...
A crayon box of colors...welcome when all else is grey slush and dead grass.
This pocket park, the Murphy Play Lot, is across from Mudgie's Deli...must stop for lunch.
Back to the brave colors and Queen Anne details....
A neighborhood full of history....
Below: Worker's Row House, the home of an archeological dig, soon-to-be museum, and subject of a current exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum
A neighborhood of artists and adventurers...proof is in this porch railing....
A door handle on Michigan Avenue....
This steel totem is in a small park on Rosa Parks Boulevard, by Jason Huffines.
There is a lovely little park in North Corktown, with a burgeoning sculpture garden. The fish sculpture is by Tom Rudd.
New Growth, by Graeme Whyte, in the same park...
I miss you, MCB. When is Astro Coffee opening?
Here's to a long life, and a merry one;
a quick death, and an easy one;
a pretty girl, and an honest one;
a cold beer, and another one!
(a traditional Irish toast)
I am a PJ's Lager House fan, myself. What's your favorite hangout for parade day?

  1. Yesterday I noticed the lettering on that glove factory, "On hand since 1912," which really amused me.

    Also, a dear friend of mine lives in that house with the artsy porch railing. It was there when he moved in.

  2. I love that porch railing..it makes you really think about how even simple everyday things can be transformed by design.
