Too Cold For Handball On Belle Isle?

The handball and racquetball courts on Belle Isle seem to be pretty busy in the warmer months.. I was impressed to find a Belle Isle Racquetball group that also has a facebook page..it looks like some devoted players from the Michigan Handball Association work hard to maintain the courts. Even in the snow, they look terrific after last summer's renovations. In January, the only warmth is from the color of the benches in the winter sun.

 Apparently handball became popular in the US in the 1880's, around the time Belle Isle Park was created. The earliest specific references I could find for handball courts on Belle Isle dated to the early sixties. If anyone out there knows more, I'd love to hear about the history of handball on the island.

I will be sitting here daydreaming of summer.
